Dobele Distric is situated in the south west part of Latvia, where the vast area of Zemgale Plain with its picturesque river valleys passes into Austrumkursa Plateau. Here the climate is warmer than in other places of Latvia.

The Distric borders on Saldus, Tukums and Jelgava Districts and the Republic of Lithuania. There are 15 parishes, one county, two cities – Dobele and Auce in the district.

From times immemorial up to nowadays the main occupation to the inhabitants of the region has been agriculture. The most part of the territory of the district is arable land, which is considered to be the best cultivated and the one with the highest cadastral value in Latvia.

The territory of Dobele District has been inhabited already in the 1^st millennium B.C., it is rich in archaeological and relating to the history of civilization monuments: settlements, ancient grave yards, castle mounds, churches, castles and estates.

Up to the 12th century, when Latvia was invaded by German crusaders, this territory was inhabited by ancient Tribes of Zemgaļi ( the Semigallians ) and formed several administrative and political centres Dobele and Tērvete being the most noteworthy of them.

At present Dobele District is well known in Latvia and also beyond the borders of the state by Sprīdītis ( Tom Thumb ) – the fairy tale hero created by the writer Anna Brigadere, Tērvete Nature Park, mysterious Forest in Pokaiņi and the Lilac Garden arranged by the selectionist Pēteris Upītis, where you can find the greatest collection of lilac in the world.

One of the celebrities of Dobele Distric is Kārlis Ulmanis – the founder of the state of Latvia and the last president of Latvia in the pre- war period (1934 – 1940). The memorial museum has been opened in his native house “ Pikšas’’ in Bērze parish

Dobele District is recognized in Latvia and beyond its borders by the name of Stock Company “Tērvete” with its products “Tērvete Beer” and its sports horses, “Baltic Candles Ltd.” candles , Stock Company „Dobeles dzirnavnieks”, Ltd „Tenax” and Stock Company „Spodrība” products.
