Akmenės district

Akmenė district is situated within the land of Samogitia (Žemaitija), in the north of the Republic of Lithuania, at the very end of the state’s border between Lithuania and Latvia. It is within the catchment area of the River Venta and its affluent of the rivers Dabikinė, Virvytė, and Vadakstis. The River Venta, which is the third river in Lithuania according to its size, flows through this land. In order to preserve the natural distinction, the Venta Regional Park, which area comes to 10 600 hectares, was established in 1992. It would be unforgivable to visit the Akmenė district and not to see a unique Kamanos Natural Reservation, which is one of the largest and the most interesting marshes in Lithuania.  The natural history of the after ice-age has been perpetuated there. Their age is 10 – 12 thousand years.

Moreover, it is also very important to mention the most beautiful homesteads, museums, churches and impressive limestone quarries in Akmenė district, Akmenė Natural and Recreation Park as well as other sights...

Naujoji Akmenė is one of the youngest towns in Lithuania that was began to be build in 1949. In 1965 it was granted the rights of a town and it was decided to move the center of Akmenė district here. Soon after, a municipality building, post office and supermarket were built. In this way, the town square was formed which was fully completed by building the Holy Ghost Church (built in 1998), attractive by its unusual and dynamic architectural composition.
